Strawberry Chile Margarita

lightly adapted from: Eating Well June 2013
makes: 1 serving (or 2 scant ½ cup servings)

This beautifully colored cocktail is a delicious combination of sweet and spicy. It was the perfect companion to the cola-marinated flank steak with frito chilaquiles we had the other night. It combines two of my favorite ingredients, strawberries and jalapeños. Be sure to check out the variations at the bottom!

6 ripe organic strawberries, hulled, plus more for garnish
1 or 2 slices fresh jalapeño, plus more for garnish (1=mildly spicy 2= medium. I muddled 2)
½ lime cut into wedges
3 ounces silver tequila
1 ounce Patron Citronge (triple sec or Grand Marnier will also work)
1 tablespoon simple syrup or agave nectar, or to taste

In the bottom of a cocktail shaker muddle the strawberries, jalapeño(s) and lime until the berries are broken down. Add liquors and simple syrup. Add a handful of  ice and shake well. Taste and add more simple syrup or jalapeño if desired. Using a mesh strainer, strain into cocktail glass of choice. Garnish with a strawberry and jalapeño slice(s).

*Substitute vodka or gin for the tequila and use Grand Marnier as the secondary liquor.
