makes enough for one highball, or 2 rocks glasses
4 orange wedges
6 basil leaves, plus 1 or 2 for garnish
1 ½ oz ginger honey syrup, recipe follows
2 oz citrus vodka (recommended: Stoli Citros)
1 oz Cointreau or triple sec
splash of club soda
In a cocktail shaker, muddle the orange wedges with the basil and ginger honey syrup.
Add the vodka and Cointreau. Top with ice and shake shake shake. Strain into a highball glass partially filled with ice. Top with a few splashes of club soda. Garnish with an orange slice and basil leaf.
Substitute sparkling white wine for the club soda, and pour into a champagne flute for a spiced basil mimosa
For a tangier flavor, substitute lemon for the orange, use 2 oz of syrup, and club soda.
Ginger Honey Syrup
1 cup water
1 cup sugar
1 tablespoon honey
¼ cup cubed peeled fresh ginger, or refrigerated + jarred chopped ginger
Heat the water over medium heat and stir in the sugar. Cook, stirring, until the sugar has dissolved. Add the honey and stir well. Add the ginger and remove from heat. Steep for 45 minutes. Strain syrup into a bottle. Keep refrigerated until ready to use.
