“This recipe is taken from Harry Craddock’s 1930 Savoy Cocktail Book, where it caters for six people and bears the line: “So called because it will either cure Rattlesnake bite, or kill Rattlesnakes, or make you see them.”

2 ounces rye whiskey
dash absinthe
4 teaspoons lemon juice
3 teaspoons egg white
2 teaspoons simple syrup

Shake all ingredients briskly with ice (long and hard to froth the egg white). Strain into a martini or coupe glass and serve.
